Taino girl holding a statue of the Taino moon goddess. I tried to be as accurate as possible while still adding my own vision. The taino were indigenous to the Carribean area thousands of years ago. Few remain today as a result of disease and massacres in the 1500s. There are descendants of the Taino today although the number is small. Few items like statues, pots, and zemis, representations of their gods and ancestors remain today. I am Puerto Rican and although I don't know if I have Taino in me, I am learning so much and loving what I'm learning!!!
Legend tells that the sun descended into a cave while the moon ascended from it and vice versa. The taino were mostly naked and decorated themselves with red paint, shells, and facial piercings. Married women would wear small skirts.
